Message from the York Region Accessibility Advisory Committee

Although Opening Doors is York Region's fifth Accessibility Plan released under the Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2001 (ODA), it is the first under our term as the 2007 – 2010 York Region Accessibility Advisory Committee (YRAAC).

The members of our Committee have come together from all across York Region, representing people with varying disabilities, backgrounds, and ages to contribute a variety of perspectives. We have taken this representation seriously when serving as the voice of people with disabilities living in York Region.

It's been a pleasure to work with Regional Council and Regional staff during the accessibility planning process. We will continue to advise Council on its implementation of the initiatives included in this Plan throughout the coming year. Under the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005 (AODA), our role will change from advising Council on their annual accessibility plans to advising Council on compliance with the new accessibility standards.

We look forward to supporting the Region's efforts in both roles under the ODA and the AODA, to open doors for its residents with disabilities to the programs, services and facilities that the Region offers.
