Message from York Region Accessibility Advisory Committee

It's hard to believe it was just three short years ago that we began our term as the York Region Accessibility Advisory Committee.

In these three years, we've had the privilege of supporting the Region's efforts by participating in committee meetings, workshops, focus groups, meetings with the media and attending numerous events promoting accessibility, changing attitudes and raising awareness.

We've worked directly with staff and members of Regional Council, provided input on Regional policies and programs, and volunteered our time to support the efforts of our nine local municipal Accessibility Advisory Committees.

We have seen fantastic accomplishments here at the Region through the implementation of three accessibility plans and the development of Towards Accessibility: York Region's Fourth Accessibility Plan. We are very proud and honoured to have played an integral role in these accomplishments.

We hope that we have left a legacy that has begun to raise understanding of the barriers and challenges faced everyday by persons with disabilities and ways to meet these challenges.

We would like to express our gratitude and thanks to Regional Council and Joann Simmons, Commissioner of Community Services, Housing and Health Services, who leads the Region's implementation of the ODA, and Regional staff from every department for their support, for listening to us and for giving people with disabilities a voice in York Region.

Our term has now come to an end and it is time to hand the torch over to another Accessibility Advisory Committee allowing them to run the next leg of the race. We've set the pace and have full confidence that this next committee will take accessibility to another level in York Region.
