On February 28, 2006 almost 80 municipal staff and residents attended a workshop hosted by the Regional Municipality of York and the York Region Accessibility Advisory Committee. Joann Simmons, Commissioner of Community Services, Housing and Health Services was the moderator for the evening that included presentations from the Accessibility Directorate of Ontario, Regional Staff, the York Region AAC and Regional Council. Regional Solicitor, Joy Hulton also gave a presentation outlining the potential implications of the AODA for municipalities and the broader public sector. A number of staff from our Regional ODA Staff Committee were also in attendance and provided support at the workshop.
The goal of the workshop was to provide an opportunity for municipal staff, broader public sector organizations, local accessibility advisory committees, community agencies and the public, including people with disabilities, to learn about the new AODA. The workshop also included information on how accessibility standards will be developed, municipal obligations and the changing roles of local accessibility advisory committees.
