The majority of injuries that occur in natural disasters are cuts caused by flying glass and debris, and puncture wounds from exposed nails, metal and glass. In the initial onset of an emergency, you may not have immediate access to medical emergency personnel. As many injuries are not life threatening, it is important to know what to do for your family members and others requiring assistance.
Basic First Aid and CPR courses are often available through your local municipal recreation department, or through organizations like the Canadian Red Cross and St. John Ambulance.
Once you know what to do, the contents of a First Aid Kit can help you do it – primarily stop bleeding and prevent infection. Keep first aid supplies in your Emergency Supplies Kit, Go-Bag, and your Car Kit.
