We spend a great deal of time at our workplace. It is important to know what plans our employer has in place to protect us in case of an emergency.

·        Assemble a workplace Go-Bag in case you are evacuated from your workplace, or required to shelter in place. Make sure it contains a flashlight, a battery-operated radio, food and water, extra medication, and a comfortable pair of walking shoes in case you are required to walk a long distance.

·        Ask your employer about workplace policies regarding disasters and emergencies.

·        How would you be provided with emergency and warning information?

·        What would your role be in an emergency?

·        What are the evacuation procedures?

·        Do you have special needs to consider, and plan for, during an evacuation?

·        Is there an alternate work site in case of an emergency?

·       Keep important phone numbers by the phone – police, fire, ambulance.

If you are an employer:

·        Make sure your workplace has a building evacuation plan that is regularly practiced.

·        Take a critical look at your heating, ventilation and air conditioning system to determine if it is secure or if it could feasibly be upgraded to better filter potential contaminants. Be sure you know how to turn it off if you need to.

·        Think about what to do if your employees can't go home.

·        Make sure you have appropriate supplies on hand.
