York Region Greening Strategy

Greening Strategy

Education and Promotion of Natural Heritage

Awareness of the value and benefits of our natural resources is an essential factor towards securing a healthy natural heritage system for future generations. The Region has a number of promotion and education initiatives underway to raise awareness of the natural environment.

Achievements and ongoing activities

  • Forest Festivals and Events - York Region hosts "Take a Walk in the Forest" events every month in the York Regional Forest. Click here for the Take a Walk in the Forest Brochure. In each event, an expert leads a hike through the Forest, explaining aspects of the natural and cultural heritage of the York Regional Forest as an example forest ecosystem. Each year, over 1000 children, adults and seniors participate in a spring and fall Forest Festival and ten monthly Forest Events. These are provided for the residents of York Region at no charge as part of the Greening Strategy.
  • Nature's Classroom - presents a unique opportunity for a variety of non-profit groups such as Scouts and Guides to experience and learn about the Forest in a natural setting. Over 850 people enjoy the Nature's Classroom program every year.
  • York Region continues to play an active role in the Children's Water Festival, educating 5000 elementary students every year on how to conserve water.
  • The Greening Strategy continues to promote the popular "Take a Hike" Trail Guide web site.
