What Happens to our Garbage?
Each of the nine local municipalities: Aurora, East Gwillimbury, Georgina, King, Markham, Newmarket, Richmond Hill, Vaughan, and Whitchurch-Stouffville, are responsible for collecting your waste from the curb. Residual waste or garbage, once collected is delivered to York Region transfer stations and placed in transport trailers and either shipped to Green Lane Landfill in south-western Ontario, or to the new Dongara facility in the City of Vaughan.
Dongara is a renewable energy company that manufactures an engineered fuel product from residual waste or garbage. This fuel product can be used as an industrial energy source and as an alternative to coal.
York Region remains committed to diverting waste from landfill. Dongara will assist in managing the waste remaining after our continued diversion efforts, thus reducing our need for landfill. Managing waste locally will also reduce long distance haulage, thereby reducing transportation emissions on our roads.
In July 2008, York Region was able to successfully meet its commitment to no longer landfill garbage in Michigan by 2010. This was made possible due to the overwhelming resident participation in the Region's diversion programs as well as inclusion of the Dongara facility.
