Yard Waste Bags
Plastic yard waste bags are not permitted for the disposal of leaf and yard waste in York Region. Residents must use either kraft paper bags or open top rigid containers, like an old garbage can for their yard waste material. Yard waste in plastic bags will not be collected. By using kraft paper bags or reusable containers we are making a change for the better.
Here's how:
Less Material Going to Landfill Plastic bags take hundreds of years to break down. Kraft paper bags decompose with the yard waste to make compost.
Improves the Quality of Compost It's difficult to remove pieces of plastic from compost, and because the plastic does not break down in the composting process, it ends up contaminating the soil. Using paper bags produces a higher quality of compost.
Saves Money By switching to kraft paper bags, Regional tax payers will save money through reduced processing costs.
If you choose to use an old garbage can please ensure the container is labelled so it can be identifed as yard waste easily. To receive a Yard Waste label for your reusable container please contact us at 1-877-449-9675 ext. 3000 or email your request to EnvironmentalServices@york.ca. Yard waste in paper bags does not need to be labelled.
Leaf and Yard Waste
Yard waste (leaves, branches, twigs) makes up approximately 25% of our waste stream. By separating your yard waste from your garbage, you can transform your yard waste into compost while also saving valuable landfill space. To reduce the amount of yard waste you generate, try:
Alternatively, you can put your yard waste at the curb for collection to be composted (check your local municipal collection schedule) or take it to a Drop-off Depot.
