Litter is a pressing issue. Wind can potentially move litter from streets and highways to parks and rivers, contaminating our environment. Litter has become a significant behavioural problem in our society. York Region is committed to litter prevention and educating individuals on proper waste managment. For the past seven years, as part of the Region's litter objective, one day each year has been designated for Grade Five students to participate in the Litter Roundup.
Event for Schools"Litter Roundup" for Grade Five Students - November 3, 2011This year 1,500 Grade Five students from the York Region District School Board and the York Catholic District School Board participated in the Eighth Annual Litter Roundup. According to the 2011 results, the top two types of litter found in York Region schoolyards was food wrappers / containers and plastic bags. This type of litter can easily blow into waterways and forests, where it is less likely to be picked up. As a result, it may remain there for many years. A plastic water bottle, for example, may take 400 to 500 years to break down. Through the 2011 Litter Roundup, over 18,500 pieces of litter were picked up from parks and school grounds within York Region and disposed of in a proper manner. It is our hope that the Litter Roundup event will help students realize the importance of proper waste disposal techniques and instil a commitment to waste reduction and responsibility. York Region would also like to congratulate the winning schools of the Litter Roundup Prize Draw. The winners were: $100 Scholastic gift certificate: St. Gregory the $50 Scholastic gift certificate: $25 Scholastic gift certificate: Thank you very much to the Grade Five teachers who participated in keeping York Region clean and green. Be sure to keep an eye out for the 2012 Litter Roundup Registration, opening early fall 2012.
