Cancer screening and prevention
Cancer is the leading cause of premature death in Canada. The risk of developing cancer increases with age and our population is living longer. Screening and improved treatments have led to a decline in cancer deaths.
Screening helps find cancer earlier and sometimes before any symptoms are present making the cancer more treatable. In Ontario, there are three cancer screening programs with guidelines for breast, cervical and colon cancers.
Research shows at least 50 per cent of cancers can be prevented or found early simply by making healthy choices. Learn more about these healthy choices and reduce your risk for cancer.
