Car Seat Safety

Did you know?

  • 4 out of every 5 children are not correctly buckled up in their seats.
  • Motor vehicle collisions are the leading cause of death for children between the ages of 1 to 9
  • 75% of crash related deaths and serious injuries can be prevented by the correct use of an infant or child car seat (Transport Canada)
  • Nearly half of Canadians do not use booster seats for their children once they outgrow forward-facing car seats
  • At most 28% of Canadian children age 4 to 9 regularly use booster seats (Safe Kids Canada, March 2004)
  • More than half of Canadians allow children under twelve to sit in the front seat. This is not a safe position, especially if there is a passenger side air bag
  • Based on the car seat clinics held in York Region since 1998, only 8% of the car seats checked were used correctly
  • The Ontario Highway Traffic Act requires that all children under 40lbs (18kg.) travel in an approved and properly secured car seat.  If not, the penalty is $110 and two demerit points

Types of car seats:
