Your Relationship With Your Young School Aged Child

Every child is unique and special!  By now, you have a good understanding of how your child likes to be comforted and what makes them feel safe and secure. When your child has a new experience, such as going to school for the first time, they may need your help to adjust.

Young school-aged children express their feelings through their behaviour. Ask your child what they are thinking and feeling. Take the time to listen, and respond to your child in a warm, loving, sensitive manner. This approach will help your child today, and prepare them for future challenges in life.

When you have faith in children, they will also believe in themselves. Give your child choices and let them make mistakes. We learn from our mistakes. Let your child know that they do not have to be perfect. Tell your child that you love them no matter what they do. Try your best to respond to your child in a warm, sensitive manner most of the time.

Your child wants your approval. Give them your full attention when they show you a new skill.  Tell them how great they are.

You have given your child a gift that cannot be bought: you have given them the gift of love, safety, and security in their early years.
