Eat Smart! Ontario's Healthy Workplace Cafeteria Program is an award program designed to encourage food safety, healthy food choices and 100% smoke-free environments in cafeterias across Ontario.
Each year, a team of York Region health professionals award York Region's top workplace cafeterias for safe and healthy choices and smoke-free environments.
Changes to the Eat Smart! Program in 2012: Under direction from the Ministry of Health Promotion and Sport and the Nutrition Resource Centre, the Eat Smart! Healthy School Program will be on hiatus for the 2011/2012 school year.
This break will enable schools to focus on implementing the mandatory School and Food Beverage Policy (P/PM 150). To build further support for P/PM 150, consider implementing awareness-raising and skill-building activities related to nutrition and healthy eating through York Region and Community Health Services Healthy Secondary School Nutrition program.
New for 2012: The EatSmart! Workplace Program has been newly expanded to a multi-level award program that includes bronze, silver and gold levels. The expanded program evaluates the food and beverage options offered at cafés and vending machines, features marketing strategies that promote healthier food choices and focus on healthy eating policies.
For 2012, York Region Community and Health Services has implemented the Bronze award level that focuses solely on the choices available in the cafeteria. Silver and gold level awards will be considered for future years.
