Air Quality Health Index
What is the AQHI How does it work What the numbers mean What you can do

How does the AQHI work?

The Air Quality Health Index is more than just a number – it's a tool that helps you plan a healthy day.

Since strenuous activities increase the amount of air you breathe, the AQHI can help you decide when to enjoy the benefits of physical activity and when to reduce or reschedule your activity.

It helps you understand your response to different pollution levels to help you plan and enjoy outdoor physical activities at times when health risks are low.

The AQHI provides different health messages for the at-risk and general population.  The at-risk group includes children, the elderly, and people with pre-existing heart and breathing problems.

How often should I check the AQHI?

Check the Air Quality Health Index every day.  Information is updated hourly and a forecast is also provided for the next day. The index is available at www.airhealth.ca

Some media outlets (e.g., TV, radio, newspaper) are now including the Air Quality Health Index in the daily weather reports.
