The Food Safety Program ensures that York Region residents are consuming food that is safe to eat and comes from an approved source. York Region Public Health Inspectors through province-wide legislation inspect establishments that package, prepare, process and sell food. Inspectors also respond to community complaints regarding food and suspect food-borne illness through this program.

Public Health experts estimate that there are 11 to 13 million cases of food borne illness in Canada every year. Food borne illness or food poisoning is caused by eating contaminated food products.  To help reduce the risks of food borne illnesses, here are some ways to handle and prepare your food safely:
