Separate
Cross-contamination is how harmful bacteria spread. Keep raw meat, poultry, seafood and their juices separate from foods that are cooked or ready-to-eat.
- Separate raw meat, poultry and seafood from other food in your shopping cart and grocery bags
- Store raw meat, poultry and seafood on the lowest shelves in your refrigerator to prevent their juices from dripping onto other food
- Use one cutting board for washed, fresh produce and a separate one for raw meat, poultry and seafood
- Never place cooked food on an unwashed plate that previously held raw meat, poultry, seafood, eggs or unwashed produce
