Healthy Weights - Children
Are You Worried Your Child Is Overweight or Growing Too Fast?
Like adults, children come in many shapes and sizes. The way your child grows mostly depends on their genetics. Healthy eating habits and regular physical activity can help children maintain a healthy weight. The best way to know if your child is overweight is to ask your child's doctor, who will check their weight history, body build and growth.
Don't Put Your Child on a Weight Loss Diet
Getting enough to eat is our most basic human need. Children who feel they cannot get enough to eat feel scared and become preoccupied with food. These children will likely eat too much whenever they get the chance; when their parents aren't watching, when they are at a friend's house, or when they are older and able to go to the convenience store on their own. This can lead to weight gain, health issues and low self-esteem.
What Can Parents Do?
- Whatever their size, encourage your child to enjoy
eating healthy foods and being active
Help your child to feel good about their self. Teach your child that what they look like is less important than health, happiness and character
Examine your own attitudes about weight and restrained eating. Show you accept your own body
Avoid making comments about other people's bodies. Even the common "compliment" to someone, "You look good. Have you lost weight?" sends a strong message to your child
