Programs and Services Offered - Parent Resource Centres in York Region

Nutrition Services offers parent presentations on the following topics:

Introducing Solids: The How, What, When and Where?

This interactive workshop will address questions parents have about starting solids. Topics for discussion include: when to begin feeding solid foods, what foods to start with, how to introduce new foods, making baby food and how to help your baby develop healthy eating habits right from the start.
Target age range: for parents/caregivers with babies up to 8 months of age

From Baby to Toddler: Feeding Strategies for Your Older Baby

This workshop is designed to help parents move beyond the basics of introducing solids. Discussion topics include: about the importance of texture transition, when to start giving finger foods, independence with feeding, age appropriate foods, picky eaters, portion sizes and mealtime strategies, and helping your baby develop a healthy relationship with food.
Target age range: 8 – 15 months

I'm Not a Baby Anymore: Strategies for Feeding Your Toddler

This workshop is for parents of toddlers and preschoolers. Topics include: age appropriate foods, tips for mealtime struggles, how to know if your child is eating enough, supporting and encouraging a healthy relationship with food, getting children involved in food preparation, eating on the go and healthy snacking.
Target age range: 18 months – 3 years

Presentation Criteria:

Criteria for presentation include:

  1. Request is made at least 4 weeks in advance
  2. Minimum number of attendees is 15. Pre-registration will be arranged by requesting organization
  3. At least 60 minutes is allotted for the presentation
  4. Child care is required for any children over 18 months who could be present during a presentation to their parents or caregivers. Requesting organization is responsible for arranging child care

Staff Development Workshops

Nutrition Services provides staff development workshops for Parent Resource Centre child care staff on a variety of nutrition and feeding topics. The goal is to increase staff capacity to offer consistent messages to parents regarding feeding their children. Topics include: introducing solids, dealing with picky eaters, and the division of responsibility regarding feeding babies and children.

Fact Sheets and Resources

Nutrition Services develops and publishes consumer fact sheets and resources on a variety of nutrition topics. Parent Resource Centres can order available resources for their clients. Select resources are available in a variety of languages (e.g., Chinese, French, Punjabi and Tamil).

Healthy Measures E-bulletin

The Healthy Measures e-bulletin is a free bi-weekly email with easy-to-read, practical health and nutrition tips and information on a variety of topics. E-bulletins also include healthy and delicious recipes and links to informative and credible web sites and resources. Examples of e-bulletin topics include: smart snacking, family eating, healthy weights, organic foods, food allergies, heart health and many more.
