Programs and Services Offered - Secondary Schools

High Quality Instruction and Programs

Quality instruction provides students with a wide range of opportunities to learn, practice, and demonstrate knowledge and skills related to healthy eating. What is learned during the day in school, lays the foundation for other activities done outside of the classroom. Quality programs also include opportunities for teachers and school administrators to participate in professional learning opportunities.

Teachers Can Benefit From Receiving Nutrition Education by a Registered Dietitian

Registered Dietitians (RD) are a trusted source of reliable and accurate information and have unique skills and expertise in nutrition. Look for the initials RD after a nutrition professional's name.

  • A York Region Registered Dietitian can provide an in-service to large groups of staff on select topics, as part of a larger nutrition initiative
  • York Region Registered Dietitians have developed a list of Nutrition Resources to Support the Secondary School Curriculum divided into the following topic areas: Body Image and Self Esteem, Body Weight and Obesity, Comprehensive School Nutrition, Canadian Agriculture and Eating Well with Canada's Food Guide. The majority of these resources can be downloaded from the internet
  • Canada's Food Guide materials are available for teachers as background information and/or to copy and send home with students. Cultural adaptations of Canada's Food Guide are also available
  • Nutrition fact sheets on topics specifically for youth can be downloaded from the York Region web site. This information can also be used for school newsletter inserts — provided the source is acknowledged

Ensure Students Receive Up-to-Date Nutrition Information

Research confirms changes in healthy eating positively relate to the amount of nutrition education students receive in the classroom. Accurate nutrition education can be a very important component to building a healthy nutrition school environment.

Not only can students learn about healthy eating in health and physical education courses, but additional aspects of nutrition can be incorporated into courses such as business, media literacy, drama, economics, family studies and marketing:

  • A York Region Registered Dietitian can also be consulted to provide ideas on how to incorporate nutrition messaging into the curriculum.

  • Secondary School Nutrition Poster Series
These posters were developed by public health in collaboration with students and school boards.
The titles of the three posters are:
    ·         Eat healthy at school
    ·         Feed your bones
    ·         Get energized the natural way!
Use the Secondary School Nutrition Poster Series Backgrounder for additional information on each nutrition topic and for ideas on how to incorporate these posters into a school-wide event.
