Healthy Eating: Environmental Support

A supportive workplace environment reinforces and encourages employees to eat healthy, be active and maintain a healthy weight. Here are some examples of how you can enhance the nutrition environment in your workplace and show your commitment to employee health and well-being.

Consider:

  • The food and beverage choices available in your cafeteria or vending machines
  • Making improvements to the physical environment in your workplace to support healthy eating. For example, consider adapting space in the workplace for storing, preparing and eating foods (e.g., fridge, microwave, inviting area for staff to eat)
  • The food and beverage options available at meetings, catered business lunches and events

A Public Health Nutritionist can consult with you and provide specific recommendations for enhancing the nutrition environment of your workplace. These are just a few of the activities available to you through the York Region Nutrition Works program.

Environmental Support Activities:

  • For workplaces with a cafeteria, consider applying for the Eat Smart! award of excellence program. This program encourages the availability of healthy food choices in the cafeteria, and is an important step to improving the nutrition habits of employees. • Consultation around choices available in the vending machines

  • Consultation around the food and beverage options available at meetings, catered business lunches and events
  • Table top nutrition messages — a variety of 5"x7" nutrition messages that can be displayed on dining tables in the cafeteria and lunchroom
  • Consultation around the physical environment of your workplace, giving consideration to eating areas, storage space for food and access to kitchen facilities

Please see the Nutrition Works program menu for a listing of all workplace activities offered.
