The Health Information and Planning Branch, York Region Health Services Department produces publications on topics which cover the following categories: general health status and health behaviours of York Region residents and the state of the environment in York Region. Through this website, you can access the information in our publications since 2000. Other published and unpublished reports may exist, but supplies may be limited at this time.
A Balanced Scorecard for York Region Public Health (2007) - Performance indicators for major public health initiatives. The Health Status Report was released in 2002. The purpose of the report was to offer a thorough and accurate profile of the health status of York Region residents. The report provides a wide range of health related information (e.g. community, physical and social environment, quality of life, lifestyle behaviours, reproductive and mental health, death, chronic and infectious diseases and health care service utilization) drawing on multiple sources of data primarily covering a 5 year period from 1997-2002. While York Region residents scored better than the Ontario average on almost every key health indicator (e.g. life expectancy, disability-free life expectancy, education, income, unemployment, obesity, proportion of low birth weight babies, smoking rates, cancer incidence rates, infectious disease rates, hospitalization rates and death rates) we must understand that in light of population growth, York Region faces challenges that must be recognized and addressed if the Region is to improve and/or maintain this level of health.
State of the Environment Report Our Environment, Our Home, The project was lead by the Health Services Department and was a corporate-wide project with extensive external agency involvement. The final products of the The SOE Report 2000 is divided into three main compartments of the biophysical environment: Land, Water, and Air. Ongoing monitoring and evaluation of each environmental resource can be achieved through the use of indicators of health contained in the Report. In addition, the Report contains 24 recommendations for action to protect the natural resources of York Region. The SOE 2005 Report is planned to be an update of the original report. A number of changes in the status of York Region's natural environment since 2000 as well as numerous important environmental initiatives require documentation in a centralized site.
