What is a Healthy School?

In a healthy school, the entire school community works together to help children, youth and staff make healthy choices.

Meaningful involvement from students, school staff, parents and community partners can help students build their skills. It can also make planned activities more effective. The health focus is specific to the needs and concerns of the individual school community. A Healthy School is a healthier place for learning and working.

"Healthy learners are better learners." (Health Canada)
Students in a Healthy School can:
  • Improve their concentration and learning
  • Increase more confidence, motivation and self-esteem
  • Be better able to make important health and life choices
  • Have improved access to services in the community
  • Build leadership skills
  • Attend school more regularly
  • Build their resume and earn community service hours
  • Help to make their school healthier

The Healthy Schools approach is based on the international, best practice Comprehensive School Health model and complements:

  • School board policies
  • Board and school improvement plans
  • Positive climates for learning, including resiliency, Safe and Supportive Schools, Eco-Schools, and student, parent, family and community engagement
  • Catholic Graduate Expectations of responsible citizenship and development of a self-directed, responsible, lifelong learner
  • Ministry of Education's Healthy Schools Recognition Program
