Outbreaks
Outbreaks occur when the usual level of disease in a LTCH is exceeded at a given time. An outbreak is defined as two cases of illness with similar symptoms occurring within 48 hours in a geographic area.
Respiratory Outbreaks The following resources help LTCHs and Retirement Homes with prevention, detection and management of respiratory outbreaks.
Enteric Outbreaks
- Enteric Outbreak Control Measures Information Package: This 9 page document provides information on enteric outbreak definitions, control measures, admissions, transfers and visitor restrictions during and outbreak as well as stool sample collection and delivery to the Public Health Lab.
- Enteric Line Listing Form: This tool is used to list the characteristics of an enteric outbreak. A completed line listing provides information about the extent and nature of the suspected outbreak. Please keep resident and staff data separate by completing one form for each group.
- Enteric Line Listing Form – Staff: This tool is used to list the characteristics of an enteric outbreak for staff. A completed line listing provides information about the extent and nature of the suspected outbreak among staff in a home.
- Enteric Line Listing Form – Residents: This tool is used to list the characteristics of an enteric outbreak for residents. A completed line listing provides information about the extent and nature of the suspected outbreak among residents in a home.

- Recommendations for ARO Surveillance and Management: This is a one page reference tool to help Homes decide when to swab for AROs and what to do if the test results are positive. The tool describes treatment options, re-screening schedules and control measures for MRSA, VRE and ESBL.
- Best Practices for Infection Prevention: Developed by Provincial Infectious Diseases Advisory Committee (PIDAC), last revised: March 2007. This document deals with the prevention and control of methicllin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), vancomycin-intermediate Staphylococcus aureus (VISA), vancomycin-resistant intermediate Staphylococcus aureus (VRSA) and vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) in acute and non-acute health care settings.
Reportable Disease List - Ministry: This is a one page listing of all Reportable Diseases in Ontario that are to be reported to the local Medical Officer of Health under the Health Protection and Promotion Act.
