Tuberculosis (TB) is a bacterial infection that can affect any part of the body, but usually affects the lungs. It is preventable, treatable and curable. It may spread through close, prolonged or regular exposure to someone with active TB disease in the lung or throat who is coughing or sneezing.
TB is a reportable disease. The TB program in York Region must be notified for all cases of disease or infection, so that appropriate case and contact follow up can be done.
The Tuberculosis (TB) prevention and control program works closely with health care providers and other community partners to develop and implement effective TB measures to keep everyone healthy. We provide health education and counselling, clinical services and respond to reports of TB exposure in our community.
What we do:
- Identify and treat all cases of TB disease;
- Evaluate and follow-up close contacts of persons with TB disease
- Screen populations at high-risk for TB;
- Provide publicly funded medication for TB disease and infection; and
- Follow up of individuals on immigration medical surveillance for TB.
