Health Professionals - Childhood & Recreational Injuries

 

Facts

 

·   Unintentional injuries such as burns, scalds, drowning, choking, suffocation, poisoning and falls continue to be responsible for more deaths and hospitalizations for children ages 1 - 14 than any other cause.

 

·    A properly fitted bicycle helmet reduces the risk of serious head and brain injury by 85%.

 

Risk Factors

 

Parental Awareness:

·     Parental misconceptions that injuries are a normal part of childhood

·     Overestimating children's abilities

·     Lack of understanding around the stages of growth and development

·     Lack of active supervision

 

Services offered

 

·     Home and bike safety displays and resources

·     Print resources on general recreational injury prevention and concussions

·     Series of informational newsletters for parents of 5-9 year olds focusing on falls prevention, playground, pedestrian and home safety issues

·     Home safety workshops available through local Ontario Early Years Centres
