Harm reduction is a public health approach that aims to reduce drug-related harm experienced by individuals and communities, recognizing that there will always be people who choose to inject drugs. The focus of our harm reduction program is to minimize the potential harmful effects of drug use to both the user and the community through a needle exchange program.
Project YES (York Exchange Services) provides injection drug users with free sterile equipment to reduce the likelihood of sharing and reusing needles and equipment that may result in the transmission of blood borne infections such as hepatitis B and C and HIV.
The Street Outreach Program is a mobile service that meets clients at convenient locations throughout the Region of York. The van is equipped with food, clothing, shelter, needle exchange supplies, and condoms.
