Sexual Health Program    

"When it comes to sex...there are no dumb questions"

York Region Community and Health Services Sexual Health Program provides education, counselling, referral to one of six sexual health clinics and current information on a variety of sexual health issues. All information is provided on a confidential basis by public health nurses. Our goal is to provide accurate sexual health information to all age groups.

York Region Community and Health Services provide counselling and education on birth control, STIs, AIDS, sexual orientation, sexuality and relationships.

Sexual Orientation

The Healthy Sexuality Program offer the following services for individuals who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or questioning their sexual orientation. Friends and family members may also access these services.

This program provides:

  • Supportive counselling and consultation
  • Referral to community resources
  • Educational sessions at schools, businesses and agencies
  • Clinic resources
  • Youth support group
  • York Region Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual Youth Support

Sexually Transmitted Infections Program

York Region Community and Health Services provides education to promote community awareness through distribution of written information, displays and workshops on sexually transmitted infections. Information is available on all sexually transmitted infections. Medication is available at no cost to treat chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis. Other services provided are counselling, consultation with physicians, follow-up of all positive lab results with the doctor and the client and referral to one of six clinics in York Region.

HIV/AIDS Program

red ribbonYork Region Community and Health Services provides education to promote community awareness about HIV prevention. Rapid HIV testing and annonymous HIV testing are avalable at all clinics. All information is confidential. Other services provided are counselling, support, referrals for individuals and families, and resources which include condoms, lubricant and needle exchange information. Follow-up is done on all positive lab results with the doctor and the client. For more information please click on our HIV/AIDs information sheet.

Street Outreach Program

The Street Outreach Program is a mobile service that provides assistance for homeless and street-involved individuals, including food, clothing, sleeping bags, as well as mental health assessments and support, screening and basic health care. Contraceptives, condoms and needle exchange as well as referrals to shelters and other services are available. The van is staffed by a Public Health Nurse and a Mental Health Street Outreach Worker. The Street Outreach Program is funded by the York Region Community Development Investment Fund and is a partnership with York Region Community and Health Services and Loft/Crosslinks Housing and Support Services.

Needle Exchange

York Region Community and Health Services, in collaboration with community partners, offers confidential needle distribution and exchange services. Clean needles, bio bins for safe disposal and information on safe needle use is available. Other services include health counselling, information on safer sex practices, vein maintenance and Hepatitis B and C. Information on treatment programs and other services are available on request.

Safe Needles Programs

Tattooing and Piercing

This community awareness project provides information on how tattooing and piercing can be done safely, with no serious health risks to the recipient. Public Health inspectors from York Region Community and Health Services inspect tattoo and piercing businesses once a year.

Post Exposure Protocols

If you or someone you know has been exposed to blood, body fluids or injured by a needle, there is a risk of exposure to blood borne pathogens. York Region Health Services provides:

  • Counselling
  • Consultations
  • Information
  • Referral to closest Emergency Department

Hepatitis Program

Hepatitis B and C are two reportable communicable diseases in Ontario. The Hepatitis B program includes:

  • Community education through workshops, displays and distribution of materials in English and Cantonese
  • Phone counselling and written material
  • Consultation with physicians
  • Program to ensure all babies born to Hepatitis B carrier mothers are adequately immunized at birth
  • Free vaccine to high risk clients
  • Universal Hepatitis B immunization offered to all grade 7 students
  • Promotion of Hep B vaccine in all Sexual Health Clinics, Needle Exchange Program, Emergency Service Workers and other high risk professions
  • Follow-up of all positive lab results with the doctor and if needed , client and contacts for counselling and support

Hepatitis C Society of Canada - York Region Chapter

Meetings are for those living with Hepatitis C to share current information related to the diseases, treatment and healthy lifestyle.

Monthly meetings 7:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m.

Harm Reduction Coalition of York Region

This is a community coalition affiliated with the York Region Alliance to End Homelessness, with member representation from various community members and agencies. Our mandate is to promote, advocate for and support best practice polices, programs and initiatives that aim to reduce harms associated with risk taking behaviors.
