While You're Away
Relax … sleep in … try new foods and new adventures … and be careful. Following the guidelines listed below can help to keep you healthy while you are away.
- After you arrive, take time to acclimatize. Give your body time to adjust – drink plenty of water (bottled, boiled, or chemically treated), avoid excessive sun, and wear protective clothing
- Avoid travellers' diarrhea - Up to half of travellers may experience this from eating or drinking contaminated food or water. Learn how to avoid this unpleasant travel experience.
- Protect yourself from insect bites to prevent becoming infected with the diseases they may carry
- Avoid swimming in fresh water to prevent Schistosomiasis, a disease carried by parasitic worms found in fresh water. Swimming in seawater or a well-chlorinated pool is safer for avoiding infection
- Practice safer sex
- Take any medications (such as anti-malaria drugs) your physician has prescribed for you to prevent illness
- Protect yourself from sunburn and heatstroke. Apply sunscreen every two hours and after swimming
