The 9th Annual Workplace Wellness Conference
"Surviving to Thriving: Making Stress Work for You and Your Team"
The 2009 conference, hosted by York Region Community and Health Services on Oct 21, was a resounding success. Approximately 130 representatives from workplaces across York Region and neighbouring areas attended.
The keynote speaker, Beverly Beuermann-King, a stress and wellness expert and an education consultant to the Canadian Mental Health Association, was a dynamic and passionate speaker who captivated the audience with her expertise and knowledge related to stress in the workplace. She identified strategies to effectively manage stress based on the S-O-S Principle™ and the Seven Spokes of Wellness™. Examples of wellness initiatives offered at workplaces, based on both her research and interactions with workplaces, were also provided.
Thank you to all the attendees for making this conference a success. We look forward to seeing you again next year.
Thank you to Beverly Beuermann-King who has given us the permission to distribute her presentation and workbook to workplace representatives who could not attend the conference.

Fall Networking Meeting
York Region Community and Health Services Department, Workplace Wellness Program, hosted an interactive networking session on Wednesday, September 30, 2009 to discuss programs to green your workplace, promote employee health and reduce costs.
Participants gained insight and shared ideas on striving for a greener workplace.
Did you know?
- Air pollution contributes to an estimated 9,500 premature deaths in Ontario each year.
- It's estimated over 170 million trees are cut down every year for the paper that's used in Canadian offices.
- We would need to plant 30 million trees to absorb the air pollution resulting from GTA drivers idling 5 minutes a day for one year.
- A tap leaking one drop of hot water per second can waste over 181 litres of hot water a week
Guest speakers from the York Region Health Protection Program, Smart Commute and Powerstream presented resources, programs and ideas targeted at using energy more efficiently, saving money and promoting practices that will lead to more environmentally friendly and sustainable outcomes.
Some of the topics of discussion were:
The
20/20 The Way to Clean Air program works with companies in York Region to promote energy conservation among their employees. The program can raise employee morale and helps participants save money both at work, on the road and at home.
Also, traffic congestion results in lower productivity, higher transportation costs and increased emissions. For employees, the stress of the daily commute on congested roads negatively affects the quality of their life and work. Smart Commute can work with your organization to explore different commuter choices like carpooling, transit, teleworking or cycling.
