Infrastructure Master Plans

Master Plans are long range plans which integrate the infrastructure requirements for existing and future land use with environmental assessment principles over the next 30 years. These plans examine an infrastructure system(s) or group or related projects in order to outline a framework for planning for subsequent projects.  Please visit the following links for more detailed information on the Region's Master Plans. 
Cover Page: Pedestrian and Cycling Master Plan
The pedestrian and cycling Master Plan developed a comprehensive Pedestrian and Cycling network in consultation with the local municipalities. The plan  provides the framework for a coordinated and integrated Regional pedestrian and cycling system serving both the urban and rural areas of York with a focus to increase walking and cycling for leisure and commuting purposes.

The Regional Municipality of York has recently initiated a study to update the Region's Transportation Master Plan (TMP). This study will update the current plan approved in 2002 and incorporate the Province's significant changes in population and employment projections, land use and environmental policies, as well as, the Region's Growth Management Initiative.

Water and Wastewater (Sewers) Master Plan Update
The Regional Municipality of York has recently initiated a study to update the Region's Water and Wastewater Master Plan (W&WW MP). This study will update the current water and wastewater plans approved in 2004 and 2002 (8.68 MB PDF), respectively and incorporate the population changes and employment projections, land use and environmental policies, and the Region's Growth Management Initiative. The Long Term Water Master Plan is a long range plan that integrates infrastructure requirements for existing and future land use with environmental assessment planning principles. The Master Plan Update examines each of the areas in York Region serviced by municipal water and recommends a phased infrastructure program to meet the demands for water through to 2036.  The Region has initiated an update to the Water Master Plan.

In 1997 (14.8 MB PDF), the Region completed the Master Plan Study for the YDSS. This Master Plan was completed to identify and review current conditions and future alternatives necessary to meet population projections in the Region. In March 2002, the YDSS Master Plan was updated to reflect current planning forecasts and to confirm the timing of required infrastructure.  The Region will be initiating an update to the YDSS Master Plan beginning in the summer of 2006.

Logo: GTA Smart Commute Program

Smart Commute is a partnership between Metrolinx and the cities and regions of the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA).  It aims to reduce traffic congestion and to take action on climate change through transportation efficiency. Change.

Smart Commute is implemented primarily through local Transportation Management Associations, or TMAs. TMAs partner with businesses within their boundaries to design, implement and promote travel demand management (TDM) programs. The central objective of TDM programs is to change travel behaviour by reducing single-occupant vehicle (SOV) trips by promoting a variety of transportation services that encourage more efficient use of existing transportation infrastructure and services. Facts and Figures

Ongoing monitoring and benchmarking of the Regions road, transit, water and wastewater systems is a key component to ensuring that we can develop in a sustainable manor.  The Region monitors the status of its systems on an ongoing basis.  More information, and summaries please visit the following links.
Water and Wastewater Supply and Demand Monitoring Report (3.75 MB PDF)
The Annual Water & Wastewater Supply and Demand Monitoring Report intends to provide a description of the current and short-term (up to 2011) water and wastewater servicing supply and demand status of the nine area municipalities. This report documents, as far as possible, the water and wastewater supply and demand by distinct service areas. The report provided guidance in the development review process with respect to the capacity issues related to population growth, and tracks the timing of proposed new infrastructure.
 
The Cordon Count Program is a vehicle and person survey that has been conducted in York Region on regular bases since 1983. Collecting consistent and accurate classified vehicle information is one of the very important elements in providing traffic statistics. It provides a time series data of traffic flow across a given set of screen-lines; this is done to monitor changes to the travel behavioral pattern and characteristics
 
The Transportation Fact Book provides a forum to publish general information and statistics about the transportation system in York Region and highlight the major aspects about the road and public transit infrastructure and commuter support services available in the Region.
 
Transportation Tomorrow Survey (TTS)
The purpose of the survey is to collect information on the travel habits of residents and provide a data base for long-range planning and improvement of transportation facilities. In addition to trip information of each household member (i.e. trip origin, destination, time, purpose, method of travel) survey participants are being asked about age, gender, employment status, size of household and number of motor vehicles.  Summary statistics for our area municipalities and the GTA are available through the Demographic and Travel Characteristics section of the TTS Web site.  In addition, Section 4 of the Region's Transportation Fact Book provides a general overview of Survey and a few Regional observations.

Public Consultation

Through out the year York Region hosts Public Consultation Centres on various projects to provide an opportunity for the public to receive current information on the project and to provide comments.  Click Here for information on upcoming Public Consultation Centres.
