Solar Powered Flashing Beacons

Roads

In January 2006, the region replaced some of the existing flashing beacons with solar powered flashing beacons.  That is a self contained solar powered LED flashing beacons.  These beacons incorporate a solar panel and battery charging system that is mounted directly on top of a standard flashing beacon housing.

Some of the advantages of a solar powered beacon are:

  • No Hydro cost
  • No installation of service equipment
  • No inspection fees from Hydro or ESA
  • No delay in activation
  • installation in less than an hour
The solar powered beacons operate as other conventional beacons.  The battery will work approximately 30 days without a charge from the solar panel.  All Retrofitting the remaining conventional beacons would not be cost effective due to the annual operating cost resulting in an approximate 46 year pay back period for the capital investment.
