The Region maintains and operates approximately 6,500 luminaries some of which are owned by the Ministry of Transportation, 407 ETR and the Town of Newmarket.
Typically the Region of York owns and maintains all intersection lighting on the Regional road network, which is interspersed with municipal lighting. Confusion arises when there are outages as to who the lighting belongs to.
In the spring of 2006 Traffic Systems and Electrical Operations tagged and GPS'd all of the illumination poles that the Region owned and/or maintained. The poles are tagged with a 3.5" x 12" high intensity engineer grade, reflective blue on silver, horizontal mounting, with the York Region logo on it. This was to discern the Region owned and/or maintained street lights from the municipally owned street lights

If you would like to report a street light outage, please contact the Region of York Transportation Dispatch at 905-830-4444 ext. 5200 or toll free at 1-877-464-9675 ext. 5200. Please provide the tag identification number and the nearest intersection. Or you can email us at: signals@york.ca
