Meeting #2 - January 2003

The second public meeting under the environmental assessment process is intended to:

  • Provide an update on the existing conditions
  • Illustrate the transit route alternatives in the corridor
  • Provide a preliminary evaluation of the routes for the public to consider
  • Present the evaluation criteria that will be used to evaluate the design alternatives
A series of display materials was prepared and presented to the public at the meetings, which were held at the Thornhill Community Centre and at Hillcrest Mall in mid-February 2003. The formal notice (upload copy of the pdf & link here) of the meeting was printed in the York Region community newspapers and was available on the Region's web site.

The display materials included the following:

  • An overview of the environmental assessment process indicating where we were in that process at the meeting date
  • Typical cross-sections of the roadway illustrating how a transitway could be inserted into the roadway. The three options were shown;
Option #1 – A median transitway (the preferred option) with two lanes reserved in the centre of the roadway for transit vehicle use. The general arrangement would be:

  • Sidewalk and boulevard
  • Two southbound general traffic lanes
  • Two physically separated transitway lanes (one in each direction)
  • Two northbound general traffic lanes
  • Sidewalk and boulevard.
Option #2 – A curb lane transitway with the curb lane in each direction being used exclusively by transit vehicles. The general arrangement would be:

  • Sidewalk and boulevard
  • Southbound transitway lane (curb lane)
  • Two southbound general traffic lanes (not physically separated from the transitway lane)
  • Two northbound general traffic lanes (not physically separated from the transitway lane)
  • Northbound transitway lane (curb lane)
  • Sidewalk and boulevard
Option #3 – East or west side transitway, with the two transitway lanes on one side of the road or the other and separated from general traffic. The general arrangement would be:

  • Sidewalk and boulevard
  • Two transitway lanes
  • Four general traffic lanes (two in each direction)
  • Sidewalk and boulevard
Aerial photos of the route were shown giving an overview of the existing situation. The photos had rail lines, roadways, street names, creeks and rivers, other natural features and general land use information.

The last display provided an overview of the next steps in the process, namely;

  • Identifying affects and mitigation strategies
  • Evaluating alternative design concepts, and
  • Identifying the preferred design concept.
