Making the Right ConnectionsDuring the next 20 years, the amount of travel within York Region is projected to increase by more than 60%. Cross-border travel to the Regions of Toronto, Durham and Peel will also increase by 42%.
Current travel patterns show increasingly balanced two-way traffic flows between York Region and the northern areas of Toronto, and west-east traffic flows are also growing rapidly during peak travel periods.
Viva, York Region's new rapid transit service, will provide fast, convenient connections to link educational institutions, public facilities, residential areas, and business communities. Viva will also improve interregional travel by improving connections with GO Transit, TTC and other major transit providers in the GTA.
Four rapid transit corridors will help to reduce the rate of traffic congestion on our roadways, link the Region's emerging urban centres (see the York Region Official Plan) ultimately expand connections into neighbouring Regions:
• The Yonge Street corridor will extend from Newmarket to the TTC Finch Station on the Yonge subway line
• The Highway 7 corridor will link approximately 20 major north-south bus and rail routes as part of an effective GTA network, and will improve connections with Peel Region, the Pearson International Airport and Durham Region • The Vaughan North-South Link will connect the Vaughan Corporate Centre, York University, and TTC Downsview Station on the Spadina subway line
• The Markham North-South Link will connect Markham Centre and the TTC Don Mills Station on the Sheppard subway line
