Call Before You Dig  

Underground services are a critical part of York Region operations.
Damage caused by improper excavation can cause loss of essential services to residents and businesses in the Region. The excavator is required under the Ontario Health and Safety Act (OHSA) O.Reg 213/91, S.228 to contact the owner of the service and request to locate and mark the service prior starting any excavation. This page is a resource to aid excavators in the Locate request process and excavation procedures.

Emergency Locates
In case of an emergency please call 1-866-888-1517 to speak to a live operator.

An emergency is when loss of essential services by a utility requires immediate response which poses health and safety to the public.

Standard Locates
Please fax the locate request forms to 905-771-2137 to request a locate or e-mail the request to locatescontrolpanel@york.ca.

Excavators are requested to provide additional lead-time where possible the planned work so that York Region can maximize effectiveness in providing timely locates to all excavators.

A minimum of 10 days is required to process a locate request for planned work.

It is the responsibility of the excavator to contact local municipalities and other utility operators to locate their services. Locate Request Handbook
York Region has prepared a Locate Request Handbook to help with filling out locate forms and provide general guidelines about locates and excavation. Please examine the handbook prior to any excavation.
