Fluoride is helpful in the prevention of tooth decay. It exists naturally in groundwater sources or can be added in the water treatment process. The naturally occurring fluoride concentrations vary in groundwater supplies throughout York Region. Fluoride is not added to our groundwater based supplies. Slight increases to fluoride levels can however, occur as a result of the introduction of City of Toronto water, which is lake based, to Aurora, which has natural levels of fluoride in the groundwater supply.
Fluoride is added in the treatment process in the Keswick and Georgina water treatment plants so as to raise the natural fluoride concentrations.
