Chloraminated Water Supply in York Region

Water & Wastewater

Chloramination is the use of both chlorine and small amounts of ammonia to disinfect the water. The chlorine and ammonia react to form combined chlorine or chloramines. This treatment process is used to supply water in: Aurora, Holland Landing, Markham, Newmarket, Queensville, Richmond Hill, Sharon and Vaughan.

The Ministry of Environment and Health Canada recognize chloramine as a safe disinfectant that reduces the formation of disinfection by-products and disease-causing organisms. Chloraminated water is safe for drinking and all domestic water uses.

NOTE: Kidney dialysis patients and fish owners must take care with chloraminated water. People on dialysis machines should contact their physicians for more information.

Chloramines and chlorine are harmful to fish, reptiles and amphibians and must therefore be removed before using tap water in aquariums or ponds. Unlike chlorine which dissipates when water sits for a few days, chloramine may take weeks to disappear. Tablets, drops or filters that neutralize water and remove chloramines can be used and are available from pet shops.
