York Region is responsible for production, treatment, storage, and transmission of water to its nine local municipalities – Aurora, East Gwillimbury, Georgina, King, Markham, Newmarket, Richmond Hill, Vaughan and Whitchurch-Stouffville. The local municipalities deliver the water to residential, commercial, industrial and institutional users. York Region uses Lake Ontario, Lake Simcoe, and Groundwater as sources of supply as follows:

Markham, Richmond Hill and Vaughan receive water from the York Water System. The system is an extension of the City of Toronto and Peel Region water systems which draw water from Lake Ontario. Starting in 2012, Kleinburg users will also receive Lake Ontario Water.

Aurora, Newmarket, King City and Stouffville have a blended water supply, which is a combination of Lake Ontario water from York Water System and groundwater from local municipal wells.

Nobleton, Schomberg, Ansnorveldt, Holland Landing, Sharon, Queensville, Mount Albert and Ballantrae-Musselman Lake are serviced by groundwater via a number of production wells.

Keswick and Sutton obtain water from Lake Simcoe which is treated at two regional treatment plants in Georgina.

Some residents obtain water supply from private wells.
York Region owns, operates and maintains approximately 18 water pumping stations, 42 storage facilities (elevated tanks and reservoirs), 40 groundwater wells and over 300 kilometres of transmission pipes to ensure the continued and uninterrupted water supply to users. As York Region population continues to grow, more facilities will be added to the system to satisfy water requirements.
