The major responsibilities of the Area Municipalities ( Aurora, Vaughan, King, Newmarket, Georgina, Whitchurch-Stouffville, East Gwillimbury, Richmond Hill, Markham.) are to provide fire protection, local planning and economic development, building permits and inspections, by-law enforcement, licensing, local roads, waste collection, water distribution, local sewage, parks, recreation and heritage, libraries and local emergency planning.
