Community Snapshots: Recent Immigrants Living in York Region
Based on Statistics Canada's 2001 Census, the report looks at the socio-economic characteristics of York Region's recent immigrants including:
- Demographic characteristics such as population, country of origin, ethnic origin, gender, age, marital status, citizenship, visible minorities
- employment, which includes unemployment rates, work activity, occupations
- income
- education, including school attendance, income in relation to level of education, fields of study
- knowledge of official languages, and languages spoken at home and at work
- condition of housing and amount of income spent on housing
- use of public transit
- mobility and
- religion.
The report enhances Community Services and Housing's service planning knowledge of socio-economic and demographic trends, program development and by extension that of other organizations, agencies and the general public.

Interactive Maps: Distribution of Recent Immigrants Living in York Region's Urban Municipalities
Maps for the five urban municipalities (Aurora, Markham, Newmarket, Richmond Hill, and Vaughan) with the greatest concentration of recent immigrants are provided in order to increase the understanding of the needs of these communities. These interactive maps show the distribution of recent immigrants by Census Tract (an area with a population of 2,500 to 8,000) and allows users to cross reference the distribution by the following variables: ethnic origin, knowledge of official language and home language.
The data available in these maps supports the findings of the report Community Snapshots – Recent Immigrants Living in York Region and enhances the report's maps by allowing Community Services and Housing and by extension organizations, agencies and the general public to do more analysis in planning and designing programs to meet the needs of this population. All data found in these maps is based on Statistics Canada's 2001 Census.
