- York Region's policies, programs and services are set by York Regional Council.

- During local elections, people vote for local councillors and Regional Councillors. The mayors of each of these areas automatically become members of Regional Council. They serve for four years before another election is called.
- The Chair is chosen by the members of Regional Council at their first meeting, and also serves for four years.
- Regional Council usually meets once a month on the third or last Thursday, except in July and August. Meetings start at 9:30 a.m. and are open to the public.
