No Mow May
No Mow May gives bees and other pollinators a head start
May is a key month for bees and other pollinators that rely on plants blooming in early spring such as dandelions, violets and clover.
To help preserve habitats for bees, butterflies and other pollinators, York Region, in partnership with the City of Richmond Hill, have implemented a No Mow May pilot project and will not mow the grass at six locations in the Regional boulevards in the City of Richmond Hill during May.
Road safety is our top priority; staff will cut the grass if it obstructs any views
Six sites have been selected in Regional boulevards because they are wide, and staff will be able to maintain clear sight lines. The six locations are:
- East side of Bayview Avenue, from 18 metres south of Balliol Avenue, to 187 metres south of Balliol Avenue
- East side of Bayview Avenue, from 22 metres north of Balliol Avenue, to 151 metres north of Balliol Avenue
- West side of Bayview Avenue, from 16 metres south of Old Colony Road, to 285 metres south of Old Colony Road
- West side of Bayview Avenue, from 20 metres north of Old Colony Road, to 247 metres north of Old Colony Road
- West side of Yonge Street, from 15 metres south of Stouffville Road, to 238 metres south of Stouffville Road
- East side of Bathurst Street, from 50 metres north of Jefferson Sideroad, to 364 metres north of Jefferson Sideroad
Signs will be posted at each of the locations.
Grass will be mowed along the fence line and sidewalk to ensure views are clear, but the centre areas of the locations will not be cut. Please do not throw garbage anywhere including in the No Mow May sites.
