This is an exciting time for York Region. Our vision and most of our major plans are in place. We know where we are going. We know how we plan to get there. We’ve articulated our vision, goals, direction and action areas. We have public support for where we’re going and we have the people needed to get there.

Since my arrival in summer 2002, I’ve been very impressed with the way York Region does things. There is a healthy combination of critical public sector strengths: vision, delivery, demanding goals and common sense. We’re building on those strengths now, with a strong commitment to forging a continuous improvement organization.

The December 2002 Council presentation we made on the draft 2003 budget highlighted the emerging benefits of that new organization. Staff have developed innovative tactics to get the best value for the taxpayer’s dollar and reduce some of the financial pressures facing us. Bottom line: seven million in operational savings.
Across every department, staff of York Region has shown that cost control without compromising service is doable. Employees are doing things better and doing better things.

I am proud of the staff of York Region. And I’m pleased to be a part of this progressive organization.

Stay tuned for 2003.

For the third straight year, Moody’s Investor Service assigned York Region with it’s highest credit rating.   For the second year, we approved $25,000 to the Black Creek Regional Transportation Management Association to help encourage alternatives to automobile travel.
The Region approved a by-law to encourage new affordable rental housing...and received a report on a work plan on the implementation of Vision 2026.
