The Health and Emergency Medical Services Committee
promotes, protects and enhances the health and safety of the people
of York Region through a wide range of health-related programs and
services provided by its five branches: Emergency Medical Services,
Long Term Care and Seniors, Public Health, Policy and Planning,
and Administrative Services.

Goal: To provide quality emergency medical
services to the residents and visitors of York Region.
Actions:
- In 2002, York Region EMS achieved a 90th
percentile response time reduction of 20 seconds over 2001,
while responding to over 75,000 calls for assistance.
- The 2002 Deployment Strategy plan was implemented,
which included the continuation of peak-loaded scheduling
of resources, continued deployment of three dedicated transfer
vehicles and two additional emergency response vehicles.
- Twenty-two additional paramedics were trained
to the Advanced Care Paramedic level in 2002, providing
additional, potentially life-saving procedures to their
patients.

Goal: To offer programs and services that
promote the health, well-being and independence of seniors and adults
with disabilities.
Actions:
- In 2002, the Newmarket Health Centre successfully
completed Phase II of its extensive redevelopment plan to
better meet the needs of individuals with heavy complex
care requirements.
- Funding and approval was secured for an
additional 32 long term care beds.
- Funding was secured under the Alzheimers
Initiative to continue to educate school students about
cognitive impairments. The program allows students to participate
in recreational and social programs with clients afflicted
with cognitive deficits.

Goal: To keep York Region residents healthy
through health promotion, health protection and disease prevention
activities.
Actions:
- Health Services Departments Health
Connection information line received over 45,000 calls from
residents on health-related topics and questions. This is
an increase of 9.3% over 2001.
- The No-Smoking By-law enforcement and education
staff became recognized across Canada as leaders in No-Smoking
By-law development and implementation.
- Health Protection staff initiated the development
of guidelines to reduce pesticide use on Regional properties,
which was adopted by York Regional Council in 2002.
- Staff conducted extensive mosquito and
bird surveillance and educational outreach activities related
to West Nile virus.
- Dental Services expanded their programs
into Ontario Early Years Centres. Dental screening, inservices
on infant and toddler oral health, educational resources
and information on the Children in Need of Treatment program
were offered.
- Eat Smart!, Ontarios Healthy Restaurant
Program, recognized 115 York Region establishments for excellence
in food safety, nutrition and non-smoking seating. This
was an increase of 37% from 2001.
- The number of influenza vaccinations delivered
through our community flu clinics increased by 15%.
- Food Safety Program: 13,132 food premise
inspections were completed through the program.

were outstanding, overall facility ratings were 97% and 98% respectively.
