Planning for the present and future needs of a thriving
community requires sound strategic policies and initiatives. The
Planning and Economic Development Committee is responsible for the
management and evolution of quality communities. Whether its
trying to sustain the natural environment, anticipating future growth
or creating strong partnerships for a healthy community, the Committee
is aligning strategies and initiatives within the context of a long-term
vision, Vision 2026.
Goal: Prepare and implement strategic
initiatives that conserve the Regions resources and guide development.
Action:
- Council approved the final Vision 2026
document in April 2002. It was distributed to the public
and interested stakeholders.
- Completed a five-year review of the Official
Plan including changes to the natural environment, transportation,
human services and housing components.

Goal: Promote a healthy environment
through the development process.
Action:
- Completed the Greening of York Annual Report.
- Drafted the Oak Ridges Moraine Conformity
Amendment for the Regional Plan.

Goal: Re-examine and improve the Regions
growth management system.
Action:
- Refined the Regions Growth Management
Strategy, including the GTA Refocusing on Growth Management
Report, a Vision for Hwy 7, Nodes and Corridors Report
and Fiscal Drivers Review.

Goal: Take a lead role in making geographic
information, technology, products and support readily accessible to
our customers.
Action:
- Launched YorkExplorer Internet site of
YorkAtlas, YorkAerial and YorkLocator, York Regions
web-based interactive mapping applications.
- Successfully delivered the GTA Digital
Orthophotography and Terrain Data Project, leveraging Provincial
investment.
- Increased strategic alliances and partnerships
with our tourism industry partners and tourism development
agencies to attract visitors to York Region.

Goal: Promote York Region tourism and economic development.
Action:
- Produced and distributes over 75,000 York
Region Visitors Guides and secured increased advertising
and partnership revenues.
- Increased strategic alliances and partnerships
with our tourism development agencies and industry partners
to attract visitors to York Region.
- Provided support for small business in
Region, i.e. The Export Development Initiative and Agricultural
Advisory Liaison Group.

Goal: Support the activities of the Human
Services Planning Coalition (HSPC).
Action:
- Received a resolution of support for the
goals of the (HSPC) from nine area municipalities, two school
boards, three hospital boards, the District Health Council
and Community Care Access Board.
