Since the amalgamation of transit services in 2001 exciting things have been happening. Good public transit supports economic vitality, helps sustain the environment and contributes to the health of the community. The Transit Committee provides policy direction and guidance and strategic direction for the continued growth of York Region’s transit system.

Goal: Promote the use of transit to help reduce the effect of an increasing population and private vehicle use on roads.
Action:
  • York Region experienced a 10% increase in conventional transit ridership in 2002 to 8.3 million passengers and a similar increase for specialized transit.
Goal: Form a Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) for a new rapid transit network.
Action:
  • York Consortium 2002 was selected as a private sector partner for implementation of a rapid transit system in York Region. Entered into a Stage 1 – Project Finalization agreement with York Consortium 2002.
  • Significantly advanced the environmental assessments for all four rapid transit corridors.
  • Developed a “Quick Start” plan to begin implementation of rapid transit in all four corridors in 2003.
Goal: Facilitate Regional Transit for a wide variety of customers.
Action:
  • Approved the YRT five-year Service Plans for both conventional and specialized transit.
  • Implemented $5.1 million in new conventional transit services.
