Transportation and Works aims to provide safe, effective and efficient transportation services, both contracted and directly delivered, to the residents and businesses of York Region. The committee’s decisions impact us through the roads we drive on, the water we drink and use, and how we manage waste.


Goal: Carry out short and long term planning of the roads system to ensure the Region’s growth demands are met.
Actions:
  • Regional Council completed and adopted the York Region Transportation Master Plan to identify transportation improvements required to manage the anticipated growth in the Region to the year 2031.
  • Completed the York/Peel Boundary Area Transportation Study to determine the short and long term transportation improvements needed in the boundary area between York and Peel Regions.
  • Created Save-A-Life Traffic Safety Program which resulted in a reduction in collision severity.
  • Reduced the use of salt for winter maintenance through an anti-icing program, using a brine solution in advance of winter storms.
  • Planted 55,000 trees as part of the Greening Program.

Goal: Provide reliable and sustainable water sources and infrastructure.
Actions:
  • Completed the York Durham Sanitary Sewer Master Plan Update. Initiated the Long Term Water Supply Master Plan.
  • Commenced construction required for long-term water supply from the Peel System.
  • Commenced construction of new Lake Simcoe Water Filtration Plant (Georgina).
  • Commenced construction to optimize Duffin Creek Water Pollution Control Plant to increase capacity.
  • Completed construction of $37 million 9th Line trunk sewer in Markham.
  • Registered the York Water System (south urban area) under ISO 9000

Goal: Increase diversion from landfill.

Actions:
  • Transferred costs for waste transfer and disposal from the local municipalities to the Region.
  • Awarded contracts for long term disposal of residual waste starting in 2003.
  • Accessed land on Bales Drive in East Gwillimbury for new Materials Recovery Facility and Transfer Station.
Goal: Reduce waste generation.
Actions:
  • Completed pilot for recycling of computers and electronic equipment.
  • Completed a six-month pilot to test acceptance of all plastic, gable top, and Tetra Pak containers in Blue Box.
