As the 4th largest municipal police service in Ontario, York Regional Police - in partnership with community members - ensures the residents of York Region live in one of Canada’s safest communities.

Through a strong business planning process, policing goals are developed and supported with the use of some of the most advanced technology available in all of Canada.

With the rapid pace of urban development, traffic continues to be a significant community issue. Collisions and traffic-related injuries and deaths remain a concern.

Goal: Facilitate the safe and orderly movement of traffic.
Actions:
  • Provided a year round RIDE program where planned traffic safety campaigns promote the safe and orderly movement of traffic.
  • Developed the 2002 Save-A-Life Campaign with community partners.
  • The new helicopter, delivered in the fall of 2002, worked in conjunction with the Traffic Safety Strategy.

Goal: Respond to youth crime concerns including quality of life issues.
Actions:
  • Conducted community consultations to understand the needs of community members.
  • Created two Youth Crime Coordinators positions.
  • Worked within the community to build a plan outlining awareness, education and overall enforcement strategies.

Goal: Increase the diversity of our police service to be more representative of the communities we serve.
Action:
  • Two of the five members assigned to the Recruiting Bureau are from the Region’s diverse community. These officers bring a wealth of cultural understanding and linguistic skill speaking Chinese, French, Hindi, Hukka, Italian, Mandarin, Pakistani, Spanish and Urdu.

Goal: Restructure service delivery to meet the needs of our communities.
Actions:
  • Created a community-oriented approach to policing, focusing on increasing “Beat” ownership by assigning one officer to each Beat.
    - improved response times
    - increased police visibility
    - more positive interaction within communities
    - increased beat ownership and knowledge of community issues

Goal: Improve quality service to our citizens through the use of new and emerging technology.
Actions:
  • Enhanced in-car communications ability, supported through the use of GPS Mapping, legal reference and word processing programs.
  • Introduced Mobile Work Stations, the new helicopter, and Command Post to ensure York Regional Police remain leaders in the area of technology.

Goal: Improve emergency preparedness and response.
Action:
  • Officers participated in mock disasters “Exercise Timothy” and “Exercise Code Green”, reinforcing their understanding of policies and procedures dealing with emergency situations.
