The Transit Committee oversees the delivery of quality public transit services which support the economic vitality and environmental sustainability of the community. The following accomplishments were achieved in 2003 through the leadership of the Transit Committee and the Rapid Transit/ Public-Private Partnership Committee:

Goal: Carry out short and long-term planning of the roads system to ensure the Region’s growth demands are met
Achievements:
Received delivery of 41 new conventional buses, refurbished 18 buses and initiated procurement of 36 buses for delivery in 2004.
Implemented performance-based contracts for conventional transit operations.
Assumed the Yonge C and Bayview routes from GO Transit, including the purchase of 38 conventional buses.
Developed new dedicated and non-dedicated performance based contracts for Mobility Plus, and a new service delivery model.
Completed bus stop inventory and installed over 1,000 new YRT bus stop signs throughout the Region.
Introduced upgrades to electronic fare box system.
Participated in a Smart Card pilot project with GO Transit.
Implemented service improvements as identified in the 5-Year Service Plan.

Goal: Promote the use of transit to help reduce the effect of an increasing population and private vehicle use on roads
Achievements:
Completed the 2004 marketing strategies including the introduction of a customer newsletter for both conventional and specialized services, improved customer information materials and conducted several marketing campaigns to increase transit ridership.
Successfully participated in over 25 community events in 2003.
Conducted customer satisfaction surveys for both conventional and specialized transit services.

Goal: Form a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) for a new Bus Rapid Transit Network
Achievements:
Established RAPIDCO.
Developed new business plan for full Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system.
Completed Stage One project definition.
Obtained approval of Terms of Reference for the Yonge Corridor Transitway and Highway 7 Corridor Transitway EA Studies.
Submitted EA reports to the Ministry of Environment for the Yonge Corridor Transitway and Highway 7 Corridor Transitway EA Studies, and the Terms of Reference for the Markham North-South Link EA Study.
Completed the Network Configuration Report, Ridership Forecasting Report and Urban Transportation Showcase Program detail proposal submission.
Secured $50 million funding from the Provincial and $50 million funding from the Federal Governments, to match the Regional $50 million funding for Quick Start Program.
For the Quick Start Program: completed the preliminary design; began negotiations for a design-build agreement for the commissioning of service; placed order for transit vehicles; and completed the 2004 YRTP marketing strategies.

Increase in number of passengers from 2002-2003: 9.3%

  Revenue hours increased 23% from 452,787 to 555,395.
Total YRT bus fleet increased from 164 to 231 an increase of 41%.   Total YRT bus routes: 60
