The Transportation and Works Committee oversees the provision of services which support environmental sustainability, public safety and economic vitality in the areas of roads, natural heritage and forestry, solid waste management, water and wastewater.

ROADS
Focus: Providing immediate and significant congestion relief through major road construction projects.
Achievements:

Construction completed at the following areas:
- Bathurst Street / Green Lane Newmarket By-Pass.
- New full access interchange at Elgin Mills Road and
Hwy. 404.
- Phase 2 of the Markham By-Pass.
- Road widening adjacent to Vaughan Mills Mall.

Leading the GTA & Hamilton (GTAH) Smart Commute Association initiative which includes the Regions of York, Peel, Durham, Halton and the City’s of Toronto, Mississauga and Hamilton.
Development of a priority setting framework for new infrastructure to handle congestion.
  GREENING AND FORESTRY (A DIVISION OF ROADS)
Focus: Providing a healthy natural heritage system for future generations.
Achievements:
Expanded the York Regional Forest Hall Tract by twenty-four hectares through strategic securement partnerships with the Oak Ridges Moraine Foundation and the Oak Ridges Moraine Land Trust.
Smartwood and the Rain Forest Alliance recertified the York Regional Forest as sustainably managed in accordance with Forest Stewardship Council international standards.
Public participation increased by 70% at Regional environmental education programs; including Forest Festivals and Events.
Over 55,000 trees and shrubs planted within the Region through the York Natural Planting Partnership Program, the annual street tree planting program, the Adopt a Stream Crossing Program, Regional Community tree plantings, and Regional Greening support of local municipal naturalization initiatives.
Expansion of Regional Securement program including contacting over 100 strategic land owners to investigate securement or private land stewardship opportunities.

SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT

Focus: Reduce need for landfill.
Achievements:
Implemented a household source separated organic waste pilot in Markham, resulting in a 30% reduction of landfill needs in the study area.
Continued construction on a new material recovery facility to process 90,000 tonnes of blue box material per year. (Scheduled for opening in July 2005)

Regional Council approval to add No. 3-7 plastics to the blue box program in July 2005, reducing landfill need by an additional 5%.

Continued negotiating a contract to produce alternative fuel from garbage that will eliminate the need for 70,000 tonnes per year of landfill.

5,000 backyard compost units were distributed, reducing landfill by 800 tonnes per year.


WATER AND WASTEWATER

Focus: Construction of major water and wastewater projects to meet short and long-term servicing needs.
Achievements:

Completion of substantial amount (80%) of York Peel Feedermain.

Award of first construction contract for the King City Sewer.

Completion of substantial amount (90%) York Peel Forcemain.

Initiate construction on Markham Pressure District 6 watermain and reservoir along McCowan Road.

Initiate construction of water and wastewater transmission infrastructure along Metro Road and Woodbine Avenue in Georgina.

Secured permits for 16th Avenue trunk sewer while initiating proactive environmental and well mitigation programs.
